I found an old copy of Architectural Digest, dated January 2006, which discusses topics with 100 Interior Designers. I am reading through them and want to chat what I like about what they say, or if they really have something I disagree with, I’ll say my point of view. In part this is an exercise…

Speaking of rules he said that its important to know “when to break the rules.”

Through out the January 2006 edition of Architectural Digest they discussed specific idea of several Designers. This one is on the topic of colour.

The Ferrari 458 Italia

I hate to compare it this way but it looks like Ferrari meets Carrera and Lambo.

I don’t like Ferrari’s Supercars. This one I not only like but I love. Maybe Supercar is the wrong word, since all Ferrari’s are Supercars. But this is their long wheel based supercar, maybe megacar.

The headlights are perfect for competition against the Lambo or Porshe lights. Although, unlike Porsche lamps, it really only works for the “megacar.” The FF doesn’t look right with those headlamps.

Anthony P. Browne: Alicia chintz from Colefax and Fowler

William W. Stubbs: Damask

I found an ad in Architectural Digest, May 2006. It was for this Ann Sacks. So I checked out the website. It is a unique tile, stone, and plumbing company and a great alternative to Moen or Danze.

I love symmetry however I like when that symmetry is broken. The front of the building is very symmetrical but the back terraces asymmetrically down. I love way the posterior of the house is layered and terraced.

Phase II Construction

4,000 sf

$599,900

I liked this floor plan a bit because it was different than I’d seen before and even thought out a little.

UNPICTURED - I didn’t like the dome on the Formal Dining room. It doesn’t seem like the place where a dome should be. Domes don’t cover dining halls, they usually cover the most important part or the heart of a building.

UNPICTURED - In the Master Suite in the “bath”room, there was a cute little vanity set up.

FLOOR - I loved the floor. It was beautiful.

Hutch - Here’s the Interior Designer in me but I think that would be more powerful if that niche was made for and filled by a real hutch and not a built in one.

WALL - I thought this was an interior designer’s nightmare. These were stabbed into the bedrooms of each room. What if you didn’t want TVs in your room or didn’t want one there. Now you have an ugly irremovable blemish on the wall.

MUD - I love the mudroom! Its wonderful. I don’t know if the washroom should be included in it. I definitely love the shoe cabinet/coat hook.

THEATRE - A couple of things. I thought that this was interesting. The more I think about it I don’t really understand what I liked about it. I am imagining by the build of the room that it is the Theatre room. And right next to it is the Entertainment room. Now if this really is the Theatre room, that light coming through those penetrations will be either distracting or even ruin the viewing by casting glare on the screen. What I did like about it is that the entrance to this upstairs entertainment centre was the fact that it was in the back of the house and was really in a weird and sort of awkward place, showing that in order to get to the room you had to go through the most familial intimate spaces - the kitchen and the great room- to get to them.

OUTDOOR - This was exquisite. This home needed to be decorated. It would have really popped this space out to everyone. It is an actual outdoor room. I love the enclosure that was created by the arch and its supports. It acts like a REAL room and not just one created by a roof plane or furnishings.

GARAGE - I believe the garage should be hidden from pedestrian view. It’s a door, but not a public door. So it should be unpronounced and since it is far larger than any other door it should be out of the way. Also it creates a secondary and safer space which can be used for say basketball or riding bicycles which is far away from the road.

3,548sf

$350,000-$1,000,000

What drew me to this house was that room that juts out diagonally from the house. It’s a study.

It actually had an interesting floor plan. I didn’t however like the kitchen. It was all over the place without real need but they did create some interesting spaces like the butler hall.

GREAT - Actually, there plan called it a Family Center. What is with that door? What need do you have of a door that leads out to the side yard? There is a living room with plenty of access to the actual backyard which has some usable space.

MASTERN & MASTERE - This is the north and east views of the Master Bedroom. Too big for my taste but I love the fenestration. There is a lot of light to bring into that room. Another problem though is that it looks on into the familial backyard, good view but no privacy.

BEDWINDOW - A cute little room with its own bathroom and closet that is elevated from the rest of the upstairs. This is the window which has a built in chest and a sitting place. One of my rules, the window should be an event not just a penetration in the wall.

BEDDESK - Part of the same room as the window. Cute little built in desk.

UNPICTURED - The Jack and Jill bathrooms. Poorly done. One had the closet behind the door of the sink room. The other’s closet was hanging out of the upstairs cacoon, I suppose into a oversized roof.

STAIR - I loved the stair and the roominess that it held.

UNPICTURED. There were two laundryrooms. A closet upstairs for the kids and one by the master suite which was accessible to the from the master closet room. The upstairs one was also hanging out into the roof space. I liked the downstairs one.

LANDS and LANDN - The land to the south was purchased by the next door neighbor so that another house couldn’t be built there and to extend his yard. This is purchasable to anyone who buys this house if they want. So you get a lot more land possibly. I also love the creekbed to the north. However, again a problem to the Master Bedroom the backs and probably greatrooms of the houses lining the creek look right into the Master Bedroom.

BATH - In one of the regular bathrooms, they had this marblish copper tiles in the bath.

GAME - The plan called this a game room, but they had it more of a sitting room in between the two bedrooms. Plus it was entranced by a hall that was filled with storage (HALL). My wife said she’s definitely use this for a playroom.

WOOD - The wood used for the trim of this entryway and the trusses were from a an old, New England barn.

CABINETs - This is the Knotty Alder wood spoke of in Festival of Homes #4.
